Sub Focus has built his career on pushing the boundaries of electronic music, refusing to be confined to the traditional limits of drum & bass. From early breakthroughs like 2009’s “Rock It,” which fused rock guitars and funk synths, to techno-inflected hits like “Timewarp,” he has consistently experimented with sounds drawn from indie dance, rock, and techno. His recent single “It’s Time,” featuring Gene Farris, continues this pattern, drawing inspiration from the Chemical Brothers and Detroit techno pioneer Kevin Saunderson. This restless creativity is fueled by his hands-on approach to sound design—working with modular gear and vintage synths to craft expansive, “space music” textures influenced by the likes of Keith Emerson and Isao Tomita. His artistry extends beyond audio; his live show, "Circular Sound", created with Zak Norman, merges music and breathtaking visuals to create an immersive experience that has repeatedly gone viral.
His journey began in the London club scene, inspired by formative nights at legendary events such as Metalheadz at the Blue Note. A demo reaching Andy C—despite a nearly illegible phone number—led to mentorship, releases on RAM Records, and the anthemic 2005 hit “X-Ray.” From there, Sub Focus became a central figure in the 2010s drum & bass revival, collaborating with Chase & Status, remixing The Prodigy, and even drawing the attention of Skrillex. His albums "Sub Focus" (2009) and "Torus" (2013) achieved silver status and produced UK chart hits like “Endorphins,” “Turn Back Time,” and “Tidal Wave.” Recent projects, including the Gold-selling “Desire” with Dimension and the collaborative album "Portals" with Wilkinson, highlight his continued evolution. Inspired by his father’s background in the visual arts, Sub Focus now integrates art and technology—such as AI-generated designs based on vibrant sea creatures—into his music campaigns, ensuring his next moves will be as unexpected as they are innovative.
